Epic Games doesn’t store saves in one place. Unlike Steam’s userdata folder, Epic relies on individual games to pick their own save locations — which means the answer depends on which game you’re looking for.

Here’s where to look, in order of likelihood.

The Most Common Epic Games Save Locations

1. LocalAppData → Saved → SaveGames (most common for Unreal Engine titles)

%LOCALAPPDATA%\[GameName]\Saved\SaveGames\

Press Win + R, type %LOCALAPPDATA%, press Enter. Navigate to the game’s folder, then into Saved\SaveGames\.

This is the default path for games built on Unreal Engine — which includes most Epic-published titles (Fortnite, Rocket League when it was on Epic, many third-party titles).

2. Documents\My Games

Documents\My Games\[GameName]\

Open File Explorer → This PC → Documents → My Games. This is common for older or cross-platform titles.

3. AppData\Roaming

%APPDATA%\[GameName]\

Some games use this path instead of LocalAppData.

4. User profile Saved Games

%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\[GameName]\

Does Epic Have Cloud Saves?

Epic Cloud Saves exist but aren’t universal. In the Epic Games Launcher:

  1. Go to your Library
  2. Look for a cloud icon next to the game’s name

If it’s there, saves sync to your Epic account and restore automatically after reinstalling. If there’s no icon, saves are local only.

How to Find the Right Folder Fast

Made a save recently and can’t find the folder?

  1. Make a new in-game save, then quit
  2. Press Win + R, type %LOCALAPPDATA%, press Enter
  3. Sort contents by Date Modified
  4. The game’s folder will be near the top — navigate inside for Saved\SaveGames
  5. If nothing shows up there, repeat in %APPDATA% and Documents\My Games

Why Epic’s Save Locations Vary

Epic doesn’t impose a save directory standard on developers using the Epic Games Store. Each studio picks where saves go based on their engine defaults or internal conventions. Unreal Engine games converge on LocalAppData\Saved\SaveGames because that’s the UE default — but not every Epic game uses Unreal.

Platform-Specific Note: Fortnite

Fortnite stores player progression, locker items, and settings server-side on Epic’s servers — tied to your Epic account. There are no local save files to back up. Everything is your account.
